Do you remember the last time you had rice?

Do you remember the last time you had rice? When you finished your meal, what did you do with the little grains of rice left on your plate? Just a few days ago I was in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. I, along with twenty-eight other missionaries, helped run a summer camp for some one hundred and seventy little girls from some of the poorest parts of Haiti (of the Western Hemisphere for that matter).

During one of the lunch breaks I walked into the classroom. The little girls, around five years old, were dumping the rice they had received into plastic bags. I looked at one and she looked up at me with her big eyes and said, "Mama!" She was bringing the food back to her mother -- they all were! I helped them scrape the rice off the plate into the bag and their little black hands reached in to help out at the end making sure even little individual grains of rice made it home to their family.

  1. In Sierra Leone we always had a big burlap 50 kg bag of rice in the corner. I loved putting mi hands in it and wiggling my fingers and picking out the little white bugs that lived in it. My mom probably tried to get them out before cooking it, but hey, it added protein! To this day, I'll never leave a single grain of rice on my plate.
